Proposed field trips and activities.

We plan to go to the Clackamas Water Park on Saturday afternoon.  This is about half an hour away from the hotel and has facilities and activities for a wide range of ages.  All of the pools are indoors so if there is bad weather it will not affect the trip.  Here are some of the attractions:

  • lap pool and dive well
  • a big wave pool
  • a big system of water slides
  • a wading pool and a smaller slide for young children
  • a large jacuzzi
  • an outdoor sand volleyball court and sundeck
  • tube and life jacket rentals
  • pizza and lockers available

We went to this water park during the congress in 2006 and it was a big hit for all ages.  There are other trips we can take if there is sufficient interest:

On Friday we could take the kids to OMSI, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, very nearby in Portland (about 20 minutes away).  The children 6 and under could go in the morning to the "Science Playground", with "Sandland" (buckets, shovels, machines to explore the physics of sand and a fossil dig pit) and "Waterworks" (a water wall and interactive water activities), a puppet theater, and an infant area.  Cost per child:  $5.00.  The older children and teens could go in the afternoon to the science museum with hundreds of interactive exhibits and hands-on demonstrations.

Saturday would be a good day for teens and young adults to go whitewater rafting, which we will do if we have enough interest.  I am checking to find out the name of the company that we used in 2006.  The cost might be something like $60/person for this.  The photo below is from that trip, which was a big success!

If there is enough interest we could put together a hike on Mount Saint Helens on Sunday morning, provided that everyone can get back in time for their flight home!

Another planned activity is the community "Ivy Pull" that is happening Thursday morning in a local park.  We would be helping to pull the ivy that is choking out the trees, a nice community service that goes along with the sustainability theme of this congress.

This is the whitewater rafting trip we took in 2006.  Wow!

The hotel gym upstairs in the Hilton.

This gym is open to us during our stay.  It has a lap pool and a jacuzzi, as well as exercise equipment with plasma screen televisions.  The older youth may like to do a workout up here.

This is the group that hiked Mount Saint Helens in 2006.  I hope we see all of you again at Congress this year!
