SYA at Congress
Young Adults Pathfinder Package
We have put together a special Pathfinder Package for young adults aged 17 to 30:
Share a room with 3 others @$25 a night Thursday July 3 - Sunday July 6, plus registration for a total cost of $180 per person.
Food is available with our group at the hotel, or at nearby restaurants and at a Farmer's Market within walking distance of the hotel. Subway, Starbucks, and a Thai restaurant are a block away, and there is pizza and the Chinese Fast Bowl within 6-8 blocks.
The rooms will be done as a girls or guys dorm. Sulfiati has reserved two rooms on her credit card and will make the payment - you reimburse her. These rooms will probably only have one king bed each (that is all that was available when this idea came up), so you should bring a sleeping bag and a mattress pad.
Let Sulfiati know ASAP if you are even considering coming....there are now only 2 spaces left for girls and 2 left for guys.
Call her at 559-336-9362 or send an email to sulfiati@neteze.com .
Activities
Congress is a great place to explore what it is to be young and to be in Subud. Some of the youth 17 and over are opened and some are not, but all of them have in common that they grew up in, or have recently joined, this crazy wonderful Subud family.
There will be many ways to meet and interact during the congress, formal and informal. We have the activities for the teens that will be set up ahead of time (see the other pages on this website), and some of the older youth may want to go on these activities as a person who is helping (this is a paid job - see the "Jobs/How Can I Help" page). Or you can just come along for fun.
Youth Lounge
We are lucky to have a Youth Lounge at the Hilton. This will have activities in the late afternoon and evening, starting Friday evening. We have secured a pingpong table, and will have other tables, and a stage if we need it. Some ideas for activities are:
- theater games, showing Subud videos from other congresses (I hear there is a great Subud video from the Spokane congress!) or made at this current congress.
- art experiences with intrigue and fascination
- music making
- dancing
- something much better that you let us know you would like to do
Latihans
For those youth who are opened Congress can be a good time to get in a serious amount of latihan and maybe some testing on specific subjects. We are hoping to set up youth latihan times in the later evening, with helpers who will be willing to afterwards have open discussion about what everyone would like to test. And of course all the opened youth are very welcome at the three kedjiwaan days (Tuesday July 1 through Thursday July 3).
Some topics for an open forum and/or testing:
These topics are some of those suggested by one of International SYA co-chairs, Rhyana Blakely with some others added in. These can be open forum discussions and/or testing sessions. This is just a beginning - let us know if you have other things you would like to set up a forum for.
- Everything you ever wanted to know about Subud but were afraid to ask.
- Marriage or relationships, and how to make them work.
- Sex, drugs and rock and roll.
- How to introduce Subud to your friends.
- Post-congress blues.....how to make your situation more liveable when you go back from congress
- How can youth take care of each other?
SYA Chairs
The current Subud Youth Association co-chairs are Sonya Hubbard (young) and Sulfiati Harris (much older!). Sonya has been very active for the last two years, and has put on or helped to put on several SYA events around the country. She is currently taking a little break to get her business started, so Sulfiati is more actively putting on the SYA program this month, though Sonya will be happily very active at the National Congress in Vancouver.
We are testing for the SYA co-chair positions at this congress....so please consider if you would like to take on this fun, active, and very important job!
